- A strategy used by companies that are facing a hostile takeover that is intended to make their shares as unattractive or inaccessible as possible. Stock may be diluted by offering low-price shares to current shareholders in order to make it more expensive for another company to buy them out, or the articles of incorporation may be changed to require the approval of a greater proportion of the shareholders for the takeover.
